Japanese
NATSAT Duo

Natsuki Tamura – trumpet
Satoko Fujii – piano
gThe wife-husband team from Japan was simply brilliant. Though their
work has a fair amount of compositional structure, it consistently
reveals a wide-open and unpredictable nature that makes its performance
a thrilling ride for the listener.h\Steve Feeney, Portland Press Herald
gOur pick for the best of the festc Fujii has a way of pulling the most
powerful and expressive sounds out of the pianoc And the pair is better
than the sum of its parts. Intuition and communication like that is
rare.h \ Adam Kinner, The Montreal Gazette
Since 1997, Tamura and Fujiifs powerful collaboration has enlightened
and engaged listeners. Their repertoire ranges from total
improvisation to Tamurafs deeply beautiful, world-music influenced
compositions and Fujiifs compositions with their complicating meter,
line, and harmony. With just two instruments, they can sound like
anything from a quiet Japanese traditional song to the blast of a crazy
large ensemble. They have wowed audiences at jazz festivals in London,
Vancouver, and Montreal, and other around the world.
Their four duet CDs are How Many? (1997), Clouds (2002), In
Krakow, In November (2006), and Chun (2008).
